Car battery problems

A car’s battery is the lifeline of any car. A car battery must be replaced periodically. Otherwise its performance will degrade over time. Batteries require timely maintenance and must be serviced regularly in order to obtain optimum performance. People usually give importance to other components of a car like to a windscreen crack repair but a battery is not checked on a regular basis.

Troubleshooting car battery problems can be quite frustrating sometimes. Knowing specific symptoms can help you narrow down the possible problems much quicker. Below, are some common car battery problems:

  • Human error- At times it has been witnessed that people forget to switch off their car lights which in turn drains the battery. Your inattentiveness may cost you, in your next drive. Beware, and do check your car properly before leaving it. Most new cars alert you, if you’ve left the lights on, but may not have alerts for other components of the car.
  • Bad charging-If the charging system isn’t working properly, then your car battery can drain even when you’re driving. If most components of the car like lights, radio, and other things are running off your alternator, the car battery will drain and you could end up with car battery failure and you’ll be stranded at roadside with a stalled car that needs a boost.
  • Parasitic drain- It happens when the components in the car continue to run even after the key is turned off. Some parasitic drain is normal – as when the battery delivers enough energy to keep things like your car clock and your security alarm operational at all times. Sometimes, though parasitic drain exceeds the normal rate, and can drain the car battery.
  • Defective alternator diode- Your battery can drain, if your alternator has a bad diode. Even when the engine is shut off, the bad diode can even cause the circuit to charge. Then you end up stuck in the morning as the car won’t start.
  • Old battery- The old battery might not hold a full charge any longer. If the car isn’t starting consistently, it’s possible that the battery is just worn out. Car battery should be replaced every 4-5 years, so if your car isn’t starting consistently, then consider replacing your battery. You will need the assistance of a qualified mechanic if the cause of the battery drain is not human error. A professional can diagnose your electrical problem and determine if it is related to the battery or any other component in the car electrical system.

Imagine on a planned holiday in Coimbatore, enjoying the view of the sea through the windshield and breaking down with a dead battery and no experts nearby for help. As it is not possible to get professional help always, so it is better to be prepared. This means to turn off all interior and exterior lights, important to unplug power adapters, too.

Try the following troubleshooting steps in order, if you see a range between thirteen and fourteen volts with the engine running:

  1. As required, check and refill the electrolyte. Low electrolyte level often causes the battery to die.
  2. Pull the battery terminals off and thoroughly clean the battery terminals by. Charge the battery again and with the help of a battery tester make sure it hold the charge. If this does not happen the battery requires replacement.
  3. If the electrolyte level is correct and the terminals are clean, but the battery still the battery won’t hold charge, then either the lead oxide plates have deteriorated too much or they’ve internally become shorted internally and it’s time to replace the battery.

It takes power for the car to start that is completely produced by the battery. The alternator keeps the car battery once the car is started going by replacing the power used to start the engine and run the vehicle’s electronic accessories. Battery requires a regular maintenance. In big cities like Bangalore, even car glass replacement companies provide a check-up for the car batteries. Batteries can do stuff specially when we’re not looking, and we need to help them go the distance. With a professional service you can battle battery defects which are low capacity, high internal resistance and elevated self-discharge.
